The Harlem Globetrotters are known worldwide as the “Ambassadors of Goodwill,” breaking down barriers between cultures, societies and people from all walks of life. Globetrotter players spread goodwill throughout the year by visiting hospitals, schools and youth groups, and by helping charities all over the world.
If you are a NJ elementary school, here is your school’s chance to become a “Goodwill Ambassador” with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Students in your school will complete a form describing where they would like to bring one of the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters to spread goodwill in New Jersey. In their essay, they should tell where they want the Globetrotters to visit, who they want them to visit and why. The goodwill visit should benefit a person, group of people or all of society.
Each school will select a winning entry from those submitted at the school and forward it to the IZOD Center Marketing Department, by either mail at: PO Box C-250, East Rutherford, NJ 07073; E-mail: at eventmarketing@njsea.com
(Subject line must read: Harlem Globetrotters application ); or fax: at 201-842-5412.
From those finalists, the Globetrotters and the New Jersey State Library will select two winning requests – one in North Jersey (north of Trenton) and one in South Jersey.
A Harlem Globetrotters player will bring their renowned “C.H.E.E.R. for Character” program to each winner’s school and bring the winning student’s “vision” to life by executing the goodwill mission laid out in his or her essay.
The Globetrotters designed the C.H.E.E.R. program with assistance from the U.S. Department of Education. The program focuses on Cooperation, Healthy mind & body, Effort, Enthusiasm, and Responsibility. It targets 6-12 year-old students and involves Globetrotter players incorporating their signature ball handling skills with a “C.H.E.E.R.”™ basketball. The basketball includes each of the character traits printed on the outside of the ball and is used as a key tool during the presentation to each school. Globetrotter players encourage students to match their actions with those five character traits in all their life experiences with parents, teachers and one another. Character education involves getting kids to care about school and each other in order to better prepare the students for the challenges they will soon face as young adults.
The Globetrotters will bring their 2011 “4 Times the Fun” North American Tour to NJ, PA, and NY in February and March including two games at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford on Feb. 19 and 21.
Globetrotters visit to North Jersey winner: tentatively would be during the week of Feb 14.
Globetrotters visit to South Jersey winner: tentatively would be during the week of Feb 28.
